He Was “Freakish” And “Horrifying” To Look At So He Suffered On His Own For Too Long

*Every time Phoenix is discussed in the news or has his photo shared, it comes with a warning label. Yes, he doesn’t look like the “average” dog. But he is not a freak and he is not suffering. He’s just different. But finally, thanks to wonderful people who refused to look away, he’s safe! This is his story!

The stray dog that has been dubbed by locals as “freakish” and “horrifying” has finally been saved by rescuers. According to news outlets, the dog now named Phoenix, is so scary to look at that he’s been ignored time and time again. People have reportedly run away from him while he suffered on his own, on the streets.

While we understand his face is upsetting to look at, his disfigurement is through no fault of his own.

Can you imagine going through all this poor boy has and no one wants to help you because you are too scary to look at?

Skiatook Paws & Claws Animal Rescue says that Phoenix has been scavenging for food in the Collinsville, Oklahoma area for quite some time. But people, instead of getting him the help he needed, they just looked away. Finally, someone stepped forward and called the rescue organization. They described the dog and pled for help.

Heartbreaking! The saddest thing of all was that Phoenix was once someone’s dog but they failed to care for him and this is the outcome.

The rescue group shared from KOTV- News On 6:

“PHOENIX WILL RISE: These pictures are tough to look at… but don’t turn away. The wonderful folks with Skiatook Paws & Claws Animal Rescue have been working to rescue this poor baby for days in the Collinsville area… and they finally have him!

Phoenix has been wagging his tail and giving kisses while getting the care he needs and deserves.”

It is still uncertain what exactly happened to Phoenix. He will forever be scarred, inside and out, but one day, once he is well enough, he’ll make a wonderful addition to a loving family.

Phoenix, since the day he was rescued, has been in high spirits. He wags his tail constantly. He has no aggression or even fear of humans. He’s a happy dog. And again, he has no idea that his appearance is what many would consider grotesque. He’s just a dog, wanting to live a better life.

We are so happy the rescue group stepped up and finally saved his life!

Also, for anyone questioning this doggy-warrior’s quality of life, the rescue group posted this. Isn’t he incredible? Look at all those tail wags!

Here is an update from the rescue group:

Hey guys! Just a little update about me! ❤️🐾

“I went into surgery today and they took several biopsies of my skin lesions to try to figure out exactly what’s going on. My doctors say I most likely have an autoimmune disease, but they aren’t sure which one yet. I was neutered and chipped today at the same time so I’m officially a SPACAR dog! 😍

I am doing GREAT after surgery thanks to the amazing doctors at FAM! Stay tuned for more updates!

❤️❤️ Phoenix ❤️❤️

We understand that our first instinct is to look away because we assume Phoenix is suffering, but again, we remind you that he is not. In fact, his medical team now believes his appearance is due to a severe autoimmune disease. If a child was suffering like this, would we ignore him and look away? NO!

The video below was not made by the rescue group but they did post it on their Facebook page and thanked Animal TV for making it. We are sending Phoenix all of our prayers! Here’s to a happy life, sweet boy!
